Challenge

The outbreak of the 2022 war in Ukraine propelled millions of people to flee their homes, creating an unprecedented wave of displacement. Among these displaced individuals were thousands in dire need of legal assistance, spanning critical areas such as immigration, employment, education, healthcare, and business development.

Simultaneously, there was a pool of lawyers from various countries, eager and willing to extend their support. However, the challenge lay in bridging these two groups within a traditionally conservative legal sector, which had not encountered such a situation before.

Outputs

In response to the Russian military aggression in Ukraine, our team at COPS Start-up & Scale-up Studio collaborated with the NGO Linking Help, Czech law firm Holubová advokáti, and AgiLawyer to swiftly address the challenge of providing legal assistance to Ukrainian refugees.

Leveraging our lean approach to developing and scaling startups, we launched UA.SUPPORT, an international pro bono platform connecting Ukrainian refugees with volunteer lawyers.

Within just a few days of inception, UA.SUPPORT was live and operational, rapidly expanding its reach to over 30 countries within a matter of weeks. This agile development and scaling process allowed us to establish a fully productive platform, enabling nearly 300 lawyers to offer free legal guidance to almost 4,000 individuals affected by the war.

Through our innovative use of technology, including artificial intelligence, we ensured that UA.SUPPORT provided a seamless user experience while efficiently matching refugees with the appropriate legal expertise. This project not only demonstrates the effectiveness of our lean approach but also highlights our commitment to making a tangible impact in times of crisis, regardless of geographical boundaries.
